Gainesville, Virginia, October 24, 2024 – Superior Paving Corp., a leading provider of paving services in Northern and Central Virginia, proudly announces the successful acquisition of Kickin’ Asphalt Paving & Excavating, LLC, based in Strasburg, VA at the intersection of I-66 and I-81. This is Superior Paving’s second acquisition of the year, having acquired the asphalt division of Boxley Materials, a prominent Lynchburg-based company, back in March. This significantly expands Superior Paving’s capacity and reach to serve more communities across Virginia, North Carolina, and now, West Virginia.
Kickin’ Asphalt founder Kenneth Radford is enthusiastic about the acquisition. “As I transition into retirement and reflect on the past three decades of growth, I am thrilled to pass the reins onto a family-owned company that shares our commitment to producing a superior product and ensuring safer roads for everyone,” he says.
Founded in 1976, Superior Paving has built a reputation for excellence, partnership, integrity, and commitment—values that form the cornerstone of its E.P.I.C. culture. As a multi-generational family-owned business, these principles are deeply embedded in the company’s operations. Frank Surface, son of co-founder Bob Surface, serves as chairman, while Jim Mitchell, son of co-founder Bart Mitchell, is CEO, and David White, son of Ron White, holds the position of president. Many employees at Superior Paving are also second-generation team members, continuing the legacy of strong work ethic and dedication established by the company’s founders.
Superior Paving president David White shares his excitement about the acquisition. “Our growth has been thoughtful and strategic,” he says. “We’re thrilled to extend our reach into the Western region of the state while we welcome the team from Kickin' Asphalt into our Superior Paving family. The energy amongst our team right now is electric.”
T“I’ve never seen a company as committed to its employees as Superior,” remarks Mike Boyd, vice president of operations and a 33-year veteran at Superior Paving. “Our mission to ‘develop remarkable employees’ speaks for itself—it's not just about creating a superior product. This growth is a direct result of Superior’s focus and investment in their people, and it’s inspiring to see that commitment drive us forward as we continue to grow.”
“This acquisition strengthens our ability to better serve the I-81 corridor,” adds Superior Paving CEO Jim Mitchell. “We’re now able to connect more communities and have the privilege to play a vital role in the resources that people rely on every day—whether traveling for work, school, or other essential activities. Our commitment to delivering safe and reliable roads continues to drive our efforts across this broader region.”
With this acquisition, the Superior Paving family expands to more than 500 employees, encompassing 20 field crews and 14 plants, extending its services from the Northern and Central regions to the Western region of the state. Superior also continues to operate in parts of North Carolina and has now expanded into portions of West Virginia. This expansion reflects the company’s strategic growth, providing greater opportunities for both employees and the communities they serve.
